Hello beautiful soul!
I can count on one hand the number of times I made my bed in my previous home in 2025.
One hand.
I never saw the purpose.
If I'm just going to crawl back under the covers as soon as I read the news stories of the day,
what was the point of making the bed?
what was the point of making the bed?
Even if the news wasn't horrifying (when was that ever the case?),
I was still going to snuggle with my dogs later that night
and since my dogs do not value a neat bed....
and since my dogs do not value a neat bed....
What was the point?
My mother tried hard to raise a bed-maker.
I would often sit in a nearby chair chatting with her
as she methodically arranged her linens upon awakening.
as she methodically arranged her linens upon awakening.
My parents never kept a messy bed.
Now that I am sleeping in the same (though completely transformed) bedroom,
I have decided not to tarnish my mother's impeccable bed-making record.
I have decided not to tarnish my mother's impeccable bed-making record.
I'm making the bed because I LOVE my new bedroom.
I'm making the bed because my new bed WANTS to be made. #TrueStory
I'm making the bed because every time I pass by, I stop and beam at the glorious simplicity of a well-made bed.
I'm making the bed because I enjoy the ritual, maybe even as much as my mom.
Unlike my mother's bed-making efficiency, my process takes a while.
I share my bed with 3 dogs. The fourth dog prefers the floor.
To protect my bedding from dog hair, saliva, and other unmentionable dog-related evidence, I cover their half of the bed with a blanket.
For the dog on the floor, I prepare multiple beds and blankets for him to choose from. #NoFavoritesHere
Therefore, my bed-making ritual includes the following:
1. Remove and fold the bed and floor blankets and store them in the closet.
2. Brush off any errant dog hairs that snuck under the protective blanket.
3. Shake out the pillows that contain any visible dog hairs.
4. Replace my fancy pillows which were removed because dogs do not get fancy pillows.
5. Tuck my pj's neatly behind the fancy pillows.
6. Relocate the dog beds from the bedroom floor to my channeling suite for our day's work.
7. Make my bed (following my mother's example so many years ago).
Well, Mom, it took me 4 decades, but I finally see the virtue in making one's bed.
May you find pleasure in the simple rituals of life and living.
What are your favorite rituals and who did you learn them from?
