I just signed up for another webinar. Yes, another one. This one sounded so cool. It’s called “How to turn your lawn into a meadow”. Don’t ya just love it? I started to imagine my tiny little lawn as a place for pollinators to thrive, wildlife to be welcomed and fed, resilience to climate extremes, and better draw down and storage for carbon dioxide. Two things occurred to me while I was entering my email into the registration window: 1. I probably won’t attend this webinar, even though I really want to; and 2. I don’t even live in a place that would “allow” me to turn my lawn into a meadow. I felt frustration at both of these revelations.How many of you have signed up for way more webinars, trainings, and freebies than you could possibly fit into your schedule?

There are so many wonderful offerings that pop up in our emails and with so many of them being free offerings, it feels silly to not take advantage of all that free…information. But isn’t information always free? Couldn’t I just hop on the internet and google “how to turn my lawn into a meadow” and learn everything I want to learn just by reading? Of course I could. That’s not really what I’m craving though. What I’m craving is to be in continued contact and community with other humans who love the earth in the same ways I do. And I’m craving that feeling of meeting people whose work in the world I admire and want to emulate. I want to be inspired by others who are serving soulfully and are using this one precious life to find creative ways to repair the planet. See, what I know is that Covid-19 pales in comparison to the climate crisis.

While we must keep ourselves and our communities safe and healthy, we cannot take our eyes off the reality that our Mother has been screaming for us to awaken and change our delusional dream state. And our Black brothers and sisters and people of color have been screaming for us to wake up and fight alongside them for equality and social justice. And the plants and animals that share this beautiful planet have been screaming in their own ways, begging for us to intervene and stop the mass destruction that comes from our blind greed and ignorance. We have so much to do to be the change we want to see on the earth. I’ve just made my decision.

I’m going to watch that webinar about turning my lawn into a meadow. Even though I live in a neighborhood that contains thirsty mono-crops comprised of non-native plant varieties that depend on toxic herbicides and chemical fertilizers, and require labor and fossil fuel-intensive mowing (aka lawns). Yes, even though all of that. Because the more I learn, the more I am inspired to imagine what is possible. And the more I can imagine what love and restoration and possibility exists beyond our current heartbreak, the more I can share that vision with others. And who knows, maybe one day we will create the more beautiful world my heart knows is possible. One lawn meadow at a time.
