“How can I help you?”, asked the kind-faced young woman at the front desk of my local animal shelter.
“I’m here to pick up my dog’s ashes”, I stammered.
“Your dog’s ashes?”, she queried. I laughed awkwardly, in an attempt to avoid bursting into tears. I presumed she was new and wasn’t yet aware that the animal shelter provided cremation services.
All around me, excited families were filling out adoption paperwork and looking forward to starting a life with their new furry family member.
My son and I, on the other hand, were bringing our beloved Dibsy dog home in a gift box after 13 beautiful years together.
Dibsy passed less than 3 weeks ago. It was sudden, unexpected, and peaceful. I am enormously grateful that I did not have to make the gut-wrenching decision to facilitate her passing. I simply showed up as she was departing and wrapped my body around hers, pressing my heart gently against her.
I murmured in her ear, “Oh, Dibsy, are you leaving? Ok, Dibsy. I’m here. You can go if you need to. I love you. You are the greatest. I’m here. You’re not alone.Thank you for everything.”
She took two agonal breaths and was gone.
The loss of a companion animal is the deepest grief I’ve ever experienced.
In the past 6 months, I’ve channeled for an unusually high number of clients who are grieving their animal companions or making excruciating decisions on their behalf.
What I’ve learned from my channeling work is that our animal companions continue to surround us, even when they have transitioned out of their body. It can be challenging to feel their presence, especially in the acute stages of grief. Yet, they remain a steadfast loving, forgiving, and accepting presence for us.
For those who are grieving a beloved friend, companion, or family member you are not alone. I’m here with you. Sending you love, warmth, and sweet Dibsy energy.
