Dear beautiful soul,

This past December, four months after my divorce was finalized, I got all dressed up for a professional photo shoot. I wanted some great family photos with my children, capturing the essence of our new family structure. And I wanted some amazing head shots for my new business and website.

I bought some new clothes and hired a hair and makeup artist. This photo shoot was important to me, for many reasons.

A few days before the shoot, I was trying on my new clothes for my kids. We were having a blast being theatrical and silly. Towards the end of my fashion show, I received my first bit of negative feedback.

My daughter said, “Mom, you really can’t rock that shirt right now.” I was wearing a beautiful, sexy, rust-colored top with a gorgeous neckline showing my shoulders. I felt deflated. I truly thought I had rocked that shirt; but maybe I didn’t rock it after all.

I started to feel insecure.

I texted my photographer Andrea (who encouraged me to buy the shirt): “My daughter just informed me that I can’t rock this shirt. I wonder if it doesn’t look as flattering as it did in the store mirror. Your honest opinion please.”  I included a photo of me wearing the shirt.

Andrea wrote back immediately: “Do NOT listen to her. That shirt is GORGEOUS…and that neckline is beautiful. You might be scaring her. You don’t look like her mama anymore.”

Before I had a chance to read Andrea’s response, I asked my daughter why she thought the shirt didn’t look good on me. She told me that she “loves me in my everyday clothes because she knows me best in those”. I immediately understood.

I was undergoing a massive transformation. I was a newly single mother who was falling in love with herself as a free woman. The clothing I was wearing was a symbol of the new me and neither one of us felt completely ready for that.

It was a very powerful and poignant moment.

Know what? I totally rocked that shirt.
