Intuition can best be described as our ability to understand something immediately without the need for conscious reasoning. Intuition is a state of mind whereby we are scanning and listening for frequency, resonance, harmony, dissonance, and other subtle energies. It is always available, yet grossly underutilized. We do not yet live in a society where intuition is valued or well-understood. Instead, the majority of the population relies on the left-brained intellectual thinking which is outer-focused. Our society believes that rationality and scientifically proven logic rules. While the intellect can be taught to support intuition, it cannot be trained to guide it. It is estimated that as little as 4% of the population are using their intuition. Can that be changed? Absolutely.
The good news is that intuition is something that can be cultivated and rediscovered with practice. The right mentors, information, curiosity, and trust is all that is necessary to support the return of one’s intuition. Most of us grew up in homes where intuition was neither practiced nor modeled. Our parents likely did not have awareness of this innate gift or perhaps they feared being seen as irrational if they were to use it. Through their unawareness, denial, and perhaps even fear many of us have come to be disconnected from what some psychologists call the “wise mind”. This is no excuse, however, for us to continue on a path that lacks utilizing and trusting our intuition.
I just finished teaching a series of classes to some wonderful individuals. The topic? Using your intuition. We discussed the many purposes of our intuition and the various ways it can be blocked, ignored, or doubted. We practiced techniques designed to allow our minds to release resistance to this deep knowing and to promote whole-brained whole-hearted thinking. We practiced tuning in to one another using only our intuition while we limited external input from our other senses. We laughed and we shared and we danced. Most of the class participants shared some incredible stories of how their intuition had blossomed and sharpened in unexpected ways. We celebrated the gift of our intuition and in doing so, we ensured that we continued to acknowledge and use it more frequently.
Intuition is, in essence, what it means to be human. I encourage you to explore the ways you use your intuition and learn to welcome it as the true friend and guide that it is.
